How to go about clearing your loft

How to declutter your loft

A home can easily accumulate unwanted clutter, which tends to get shifted into the loft and to clear the loft you need time. Since time has become very precious in everyone’s life, being organised is very important. There are a few important things to do before you climb up to the loft and start clearing:

  1. Set aside a day or two just for the clearing of the loft
  2. Make sure you have enough bags and boxes to put things in
  3. Grab a marker and stickers to label bags and boxes
  4. Be prepared to let go of things that are not needed, put them in the rubbish bin or charity bag
  5. Check when your local charity shop and recycling centres are open or when you can arrange a collection service. You could also enlist the help of a house clearance company.
  6. Gather as much help as possible to shorten the length of the clearing time

With the preparation for the actual clearing done, there are a few things you need to be prepared for when entering the loft after a long time:

  • Be prepared for dust – since there will be a lot of dust in the loft, make sure you are fully loaded before entering with an overall, gloves, face mask and goggles!
  • Beware of all living and dead animals – your loft is animal kingdom, where you can be welcomed by wasps, bees, moths, mice, spiders, bats and birds. Have a pest control service’s number handy just in case!
  • Be strong – there will be a lot of belongings that you might need to give up, some you are attached to and some you say you will fix. The way to conquer your ‘I need that’ attitude is to do a test. Ask yourself this question when you find yourself holding onto everything again, ‘would I grab this if there was a fire?

Now that you and your army are ready, let the clear out begin!
